By | March 9, 2016
  • Heavy Water board (HWB), a constituent unit under the¬†Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), is responsible for production of heavy water (Deuterium Oxide – D2O) which is used as moderator and coolant in the nuclear power as well as research reactors.
  • HWB has mastered the complex production technology using two chemical exchange processes viz. (H2S- H2O) bithermal process and NH3-H2 mono-thermal process.
  • India is perhaps the largest manufacturer of heavy water in the world as of today and perhaps the only country which has mastered both these state-of-art process to meet the heavy water requirements of the Indian nuclear power reactions.
  • HWB is successfully operating seven heavy Water Plants in the country.
  • The heavy water production plants are located at the following places:
    1. Vadodra (Gujarat)
    2. Talcher (Orissa)
    3. Tuticorin (Tamil Nadu)
    4. Thal (Maharashtra)
    5. Hazira (Gujarat)
    6. Kota (Rajasthan)
    7. Manuguru (Andhra Pradesh)
  • HWB and its Plants are ISO Certified for Quality Management System, Environment Management System and Occupational Health & Safety Management System.
