Heavy Water board (HWB), a constituent unit under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), is responsible for production of heavy water (Deuterium Oxide – D2O) which is used as moderator and coolant in the nuclear power as well as research reactors.
HWB has mastered the complex production technology using two chemical exchange processes viz. (H2S- H2O) bithermal process and NH3-H2 mono-thermal process.
India is perhaps the largest manufacturer of heavy water in the world as of today and perhaps the only country which has mastered both these state-of-art process to meet the heavy water requirements of the Indian nuclear power reactions.
HWB is successfully operating seven heavy Water Plants in the country.
The heavy water production plants are located at the following places:
Tuticorin (Tamil Nadu)
Manuguru (Andhra Pradesh)
HWB and its Plants are ISO Certified for Quality Management System, Environment Management System and Occupational Health & Safety Management System.
