Work-life Balance implies securing a balance between an individual’s work and personal life. The problem of work-life balance is observed when there is a case of dual-career couples. A dual-career couple is the one where both individuals working have occupational responsibilities. These results in depression, stress and anxiety for both the people which leads to stress and lower productivity. Thus, new HRM practices are focussing on assisting employees in balancing their personal and professional life in order to reduce the stress. Studies have shown that a company providing balance to the employees outperform in comparison to others. This is because employees give back increased loyalty, energy and productivity in exchange for the institute’s real support with managing work-life balance.

Methods of Encouraging Work-life Balance:

Compressed Work Week:

The organisation must try to reduce or condense the work such as 4 ten hours days, 4 nine-hour days, 3 twelve hour days or 5 eight hour days. With this, the employee gets enough space to balanced professional and personal responsibilities. This method reduces labour turnover, absenteeism and enhances, job satisfaction, productivity. Compressed workweek gives space for leisure time, lessens the commuting time and gives more time to spend on personal work.

Employee Counselling:

A company may arrange special counselling services for the members to deal with the stress either related to family or office. Professional counsellors can help the employees in distressing and balancing their lives. They give various strategies to manage tensions arising in the office and at home.

Flexitime:

Flexitime implies workers are given flexible work schedule or flexible work hours. This theory believes that employees are paid on the basis of work performed by them and not on the basis of work performed by them and not on the basis of fixed numbers of hours spent. The employees are given the freedom to choose the time to arrive and leave the organisation. Such work schedules enable the employees in managing their personal tasks along with organisational tasks. The employees work for a specific number of hours for the entire week, however, they can vary hours spent each day as per their discretion.

Telecommunicating:

This arrangement implies that workers can perform work from their home. Employees performing most of the work with the help of computers and the Internet are allowed to perform their duties from home rather than visiting the workplace. The communication takes place electronically or through phones. It is cost-effective as it saves money and time in commuting.

Adequate Leaves:

Apart from flexitime and compressed workweek, employers must give adequate leaves to the employees. Employees feel motivated when they are given paid leaves. Leaves like sick leave, maternity leave, child/dependent care leaves are highly welcomed.
